South By South West Midlands

About

We’re all going to SXSW Interactive - one of the biggest conferences on emerging digital and Web technology.

The trip came about when Stef Lewandowski proposed the idea of a collaborative conference visit to Digital Central, a project aimed at supporting the growth of digital media companies in the West Midlands, UK, where we’re all from. The idea is simple - we all go to SXSWi, we blog, take photos, do some podcasts, video and so on of anything interesting or relevant that we think will be of use to the digital media community in the West Midlands. We then feed all of that information into this website so there is one ‘feed’ of our experiences of the conference.

You get to ask us to do stuff

SXSW is huge and it’s impossible to see and do everything, so we want you to tell us to check stuff out on your behalf. If you’re interested in a talk or an event, let us know by leaving a comment and we’ll do our best to check it out.Think of us as “remote control delegates” in a way.

Why us?

We represent a range of people who make our living through digital media, but we also have a range of how intensively we use the web in our day-to-day lives:

Pete Ashton
Guardian-award-winning blogger who runs CreatedinBirmingham.com, his own site PeteAshton.com and works as a consultant/blogging evangelist.

Stef Lewandowski
“The ideas guy” is how he describes himself. Runs the award-winning interactive consultancy 3form, co-owns the experimental record label Type and is a blogger on his own site at StefLewandowski.com

Joanna Geary
A relative newcomer to blogging, Jo is heading up the development of the Birmingham Post’s new expansion into online and digital media, and blogging about it. As a journalist she’ll be injecting some professionalism into our publishing.

Dom Murphy
Heads up the award-winning design agency Tak, was shortlisted for an SXSWi award last year, and runs a blog at TakTak.net. Dom’s presence gives us a much-needed ‘design’ angle.

Nick Lockey
A producer at award-winning Maverick TV, Nick is developing an exciting new platform for young entrepreneurs for Channel 4 called 4Pioneers. With a background in broadcast Nick is sure to have an interesting perspective on SXSW.

Ruth Ward
Charged with setting up “The Digital Event” - a four day showcase of all things digital in Birmingham this October, Ruth will be looking for inspiration and connections for the programme. A total newbie to the digital world (I’m sure she won’t mind us saying), Ruth will be learning the ropes on how to blog and looking at SXSW through fresh eyes.

And also coming along for some of the ride is Chris Kershaw a producer at Maverick TV, who’ll be providing some professionally produced video content from time to time.

Wish us luck!
